This study charts the 2000 results of the annual INSS public opinion poll on Israeli national security issues. It finds that the election of Ehud Barak as prime minister in 1999 initially led to a flurry of activity in the peace process and optimism that far reaching agreements with the Palestinians and Syrians were imminent. By the time this poll was conducted, Israeli public opinion was far less confident. Peace talks were at a virtual standstill, and the IDF continued to suffer casualties in Lebanon.
