This paper analyzes the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone, a subregional integration project between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The authors describe the origins of the Beibu Gulf initiative and analyze the challenges it may encounter. The paper concludes that if successful, the pan-Beibu economic cooperation area could have profound strategic and political implications for China-ASEAN relations.
