This empirical study on small-arms related violence in Rio de Janeiro first addresses efforts to domesticate the small arms industry particularly highlighting the city's buyback program. The authors then assess the value of the illegal firearms market in Rio including prices, volume and the symbolic values of firearms. The paper finally includes a comparison of various cities with regard to their demand for firearms.
