This paper discusses the challenge Afghanistan poses to the Obama administration. The paper argues that while US military involvement there has been highly unpopular with the American electorate, troop withdrawal from the region is not necessarily the best option in the long run. The author concludes that to help stabilize Afghanistan, the new US administration should take into consideration longer-term issues.
