This paper examines the guiding principles behind the German military contribution to NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). It analyzes German involvement in Afghanistan both in the context of German foreign policy in general and of the international state-building project in the country. The author makes recommendations for the future direction of Germany’s Afghanistan policy.
