This publication discusses China's ambitions in the Western Indian Ocean focusing particularly on the strategic significance of the small countries Mauritius and Seychelles. It examines the implications this has for India's foreign and security policy, arguing that India is anxious about the scale and intensity of the diplomatic and political energies that Beijing devotes to the two island nations. The author concludes that India's and China's search for political influence and maritime access is bound to increase the tensions between the two Asian giants.
