This commentary addresses the criticism US President Barack Obama's administration of Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The authors discuss whether the Obama administration is looking to back an alternative candidate in Afghanistan's elections. They argue that this move may be part of a diplomatic strategy to both spur Karzai into making uncomfortable political changes while simultaneously giving him the distance to regenerate his image.
