This paper examines the recent bout of volatility, instability and violent clashes in Pakistan. The author finds that Pakistan's greatest political misfortune has been the lack of leadership that genuinely believes in democracy and the rule of law. Pakistan should, therefore, increase its efforts in catching up with the rest of South Asia where democracy is now in a better health than it was ever before since the British transferred power to native elites in the region. Only then perhaps Pakistan can really move away from the brink of chaos and collapse, the author concludes.
