This paper examines prisoner gang violence in Western Cape, South Africa. The author uses various analytical themes to explore the history and prevalence of these gangs, perpetuated within prisons and extending into society. The paper concludes with reasons why the post-apartheid administration in South Africa has been unable to contain prison gangsterism and offers recommendations.
