This publication argues that the EU must undergo a serious “reality check” if it hopes to improve its policies towards its southern neighborhood. It could, for example, acknowledge that the region’s authoritarian neoliberal regimes have failed to facilitate democratization or economic diversification, despite Brussels’ active encouragement.
