This publication contends that China has become much more present and influential within the EU over the last decade. Further, Beijing now practices a ‘pick and choose’ approach in its relations with Brussels, focusing on its own interests and often ignoring EU norms in proposals. In response, the EU is adopting a realist form of engagement with China. However, the text’s authors also argue that the EU and its member states must take urgent steps to respond to China’s growing ambitions if they are to protect European interests and bring about reciprocity in EU-China relations.
