This paper discusses how diplomacy is shaped and practiced in today’s rapidly changing intra-state and international environments. More specifically, the text’s author highlights developments in diplomacy at the individual, instrumental, institutional, and international levels, with a particular emphasis on the post-millennial era. As in the past, the discipline today faces the conflicting priorities of both preserving and modernizing its well-honed practices.
