This paper examines how the Arctic military capabilities of five states - Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and the United States - have evolved in recent years and what adjustments we should expect to see in the future. Despite the overlapping claims the states continue to have in the region, the text’s author points out that their military postures remain centered on defending existing national territories. That’s heartening but the growing size of the Arctic forces is cause for concern and warrants additional military confidence-building measures, and expanded cooperation among the five competing nations.
