This paper analyzes Russia’s geopolitical ambitions, its military modernization efforts, the seeming threat it poses to the international and European security orders, and how the West should protect its interests from what is ultimately a bellicose but weak state. The text's author also reviews Moscow’s strategic priorities in the Asia–Pacific region; how the none-too-solid Russian economy might affect the country's behavior in the future; and the implications of Russia’s saber-rattling for Australia.
