This paper analyzes the so-called Islamic State’s (IS) growing influence in Eastern Afghanistan and beyond. Indeed, the group’s ongoing expansion in the country has 1) triggered a dangerous rivalry between IS fighters and members of the Taliban; 2) tied the conflict in Afghanistan to other countries in the Middle East and South Asia; and 3) seriously complicated the quest for a viable Afghan peace.
