This report analyzes how European policy-makers have recently come to perceive the Sahel as a threat to Europe’s own security and stability. The text’s authors argue that European powers, spearheaded by France, have succeeded in reducing threats to states and societies in some of most vulnerable parts of the Sahel. However, they also believe that the international community has failed to generate the conditions that would foster long-term peace and development in the region. In response, they recommend that European powers should look for new ways to bring North African nations into play when attempting to solve the crisis in the Sahel.
