This report analyzes the condition of women in Northeast Nigeria, ideally to alleviate their suffering, facilitate their contributions to local peace, and lower the threat posed by female Boko Haram members. As part of their analysis, the text’s authors 1) examine the patriarchal norms the insurgent group has exploited to attract recruits; 2) track the diverse roles women perform in the area, which include being (un)willing fighters, combatants’ wives and slaves, abductees, heads of displaced families and community leaders; and 3) lay out some of the tailored policies women would benefit from in the region.
