This publication contends that the standoff between the US and Iran is reminiscent of tensions on the eve of World War I, with the potential for a small incident to set off a region-spanning conflict. It concludes that in the absence of direct communication between the two sides, third parties should intensify efforts to defuse the crisis, taking steps to salvage the nuclear accord and de-escalate regional tensions.
