Given the increasing number of maritime disputes in the world, this commentary argues that the way warnings are being issued at sea has become increasingly important. The admonitions, however, should be based on 1) proper procedures and protocols; 2) rules of engagement that are fully understood by everyone; and 3) clear connections between tactical forces at sea and their national headquarters.
