This publication contends that the multilateral trade system is faltering, the international security system is in disarray, and human rights institutions are increasingly contested. The text’s author attributes these developments to international power shifts and heightened geopolitical tensions, which have coincided with nationalist backlashes in many countries. In order to save international institutions, countries must address the grievances of the social groups left behind by economic globalization on a national level. This may come at the expense of deeper international integration, but will be better for international cooperation in the long run.
