This publication provides guidance on how to safeguard records and archives that could contribute to dealing with the past processes. That is, such processes which address the rights of victims and societies to truth justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence in the aftermath of grave human rights violations, breaches of international humanitarian law and related serious forms of corruption that facilitate such crimes. These archives and records are often at risk of destruction for a number of reasons, from neglect to natural disasters, meaning they often require rapid responses to ensure protection.
