This paper explores the economic and strategic dimensions of mega-free trade agreements (mega-FTAs). According to the text’s authors, the rising complexity of global trade relations has encouraged the formation of these agreements as an indirect way to liberalize trade. Given this tendency, the authors provide an in-depth analysis of three mega-FTAs – the TPP, TTIP and RCEP. They particularly focus on 1) the agreements’ underlying economic and political rationales; 2) their global and geostrategic implications; and 3) the different ways to minimize the threats posed by “negative externalities.”
