As the military’s raison d’être is clearly the defense of a state, any venture by it into domestic politics is generally seen as an anomaly. Yet, this repeatedly occurs. To help clarify matters, this brief explains why (and when) military coups occur. It concludes that there are four reasons why they happen and if one of them is missing the coup will typically fail.
