This publication contends that organized crime has changed the environment of peacekeeping operations, posing new governance and security risks in conflict-affected settings. The paper examines the challenges for peacekeeping that come with this change, focusing on the role of law enforcement and the United Nations police component. It also suggests several ways in which UN peacekeeping could more effectively address the threats posed by organized crime.
