This paper speculates on the potential impact the Trump administration might have on US-Japanese relations. Despite the president-elect’s repeated criticisms of Japan’s shaky commitment to burden sharing, the text’s authors believe that the US-Japan alliance will remain a critical lynchpin of the administration’s East Asia policy. As a result, the two countries need to reaffirm their mutual interest in continued bilateral cooperation.
