This paper examines how President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has recently consolidated his power in Indonesia, which is attributable to 1) a series of astute political maneuvers on his part; 2) the strategic appointment of loyal supporters to key government positions; and 3) the President’s increased popularity among members of the military. However, Jokowi’s gains have also resulted in a fractured cabinet and stalled the attempts to exert greater civilian control over the military.
