Forty years ago, the US presided over the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, which enabled Washington to become the key broker in the Middle East while sidelining the UN. In the time since, this publication contends that Washington’s approach to Middle East peacemaking has focused on bilateral step-by-step negotiations rather than building a comprehensive regional security architecture that could endure without US power. As the text’s author suggests that Donald Trump is currently tearing down the basic parameters of this approach, she recommends for the EU to throw its weight behind international law, the UN, and comprehensive diplomacy to help further regional peace.
