This paper looks at how the terrorist Maute Group in the Philippines has adopted the tactics and strategies used by the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The authors particularly highlights four such strategies the Maute Group has used in its fight against the Philippines armed forces, which relate to 1) urban warfare; 2) improvised explosive devices; 3) resort to suicide bombings; and 4) the use of hostages as human shields and carriers of suicide bombs.
