This article examines how jihadist organizations utilize sophisticated online recruitment techniques in order to better adapt their jihadist ideology to the specific emotional, social and political aspirations of potential recruits. The authors specifically analyze recruiter engagement strategies in relation to four key areas, including 1) the age, gender and social class of recruits; 2) the religious beliefs of the recruits’ families; 3) how recruiters make contact via the Internet as opposed to in-person meetings; and 4) the different narratives used by recruiters.
