This paper examines Saudi Arabia’s and the UAE’s attempts to force Qatar to halt its support for Islamists and other militants, which this text’s author sees as part of a wider struggle to establish a Saudi-dominated regional order in the Middle East. It’s an order, by the way, which includes ultra-conservative Madkhalist principles that stress absolute obedience to the ruler, abstention from politics, and intolerance towards Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
