This JEMIE issue celebrates the 25th anniversary of the 1990 Copenhagen Document, primarily by focusing on the evolution of Europe’s minority rights regime since the text’s adoption. The featured articles discuss 1) the individual and collective dimensions of ‘the right to self-identify’; 2) the interactions between the Catalan Independence Process, the Framework Convention on National Minorities (FNCM) and the EU; 3) the Soviet Union’s role in shaping the European minority rights regime of the late 1980s; 4) the continued relevance of the Copenhagen Document in addressing present minority problems, particularly those confronting Muslims in Western Europe; and 5) the EU’s perceived lack of commitment to protecting minorities.
