This publication argues that the US’ increasingly militarized foreign policy approach may have the unintended consequence of driving Taiwan to forge closer economic ties with China. This is because Taiwan may perceive it has to take this action in order to protect its economic security in the face of 1) the Trump administration's tariffs on China, which are hurting Taiwan's electronics sector; 2) tariffs on Taiwan's own steel and aluminum exports, and 3) continuing economic stagnation.
