As a single organization, the Swiss Armed Forces is part of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and constitutes the leadership, planning and administrative backbone of Switzerland's citizen-based military. The Armed Force's overall charter is to 1) prevent war and maintain peace; 2) support civilian authorities, either in warding off or mastering severe inner security threats; and 3) help coordinate Swiss international security policy cooperation.
