The recent breakthrough in Russian-Vietnamese relations has been possible due to the new strategic postures of Moscow and Hanoi in a changing regional security environment. Despite the apparent anti-Chinese appeal of this renewed Russo-Vietnamese partnership with a strong military component, Beijing has benefited from Russias increasing presence in East Asia. This is because a greater role for Moscow provides China with broader opportunities to both reduce US influence and create a more positive and manageable negotiating environment in the region.
