This text 1) provides an update on the private security sector in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 2) assesses the regulatory and small weapons challenges the industry faces. After providing a comprehensive introduction to private security practices within the above regions, the paper then compares them with existing legislative-regulatory frameworks and global norms. Unsurprisingly, gaps exist and they will have to be covered.
