The paper considers the evolution of Chinese financial institutions into leading players in Africa. First, it examines the background of banking reform in China and how these measures have prepared them to expand into foreign markets. The report then discusses the case study of South Africa and contrasts this with the case of Nigeria. The authors conclude with an analysis of the potential for Chinese banks to increase their involvement in Africa, the challenges that they face, and the attendant policy implications.
