This paper explores China's involvement in Chad which has expanded since diplomatic ties were resumed in 2006. Oil investment is likely to play a key part in China's continuing engagement in Chad and enhance the potential for stimulating economic growth. The authors argue that by investing in a refinery, and forgoing the conditionalities characteristic of Western engagement, China has embarked on an innovative intervention of increasing importance in Chad. Tensions remain, however, within the terms of the newly forged partnership.
