Should the South African Customs Union (SACU) adopt a common currency? After applying the criteria formulated by the Southern African Development Community, this paper concludes that the SACU would profit from a monetary union. To achieve this goal, however, the economic disparities across SACU member states and their poor macroeconomic performance would first have to be addressed.
