This paper analyzes features of Poland's democratic transition which are relevant to Egypt and Tunisia. These include particular initial conditions, the short time span between the waves of change, religious issues and economic hardship. The author underlines good practices and deficiencies of the transition period in Poland and provides a comparative framework to evaluate recent experiences in Southern Mediterranean countries.
