This paper examines South Africa's combined efforts to reduce poverty in impoverished coastal communities and to ensure the sustainability of marine resources. More specifically, it looks at how the Policy for the Small Scale Fisheries Sector in South Africa, adopted in 2012, has addressed the problems facing small-scale fishermen as well as its impact on the country's fisheries management strategies.
