Why has there been limited media coverage of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), which is designed to improve governance in African Union member states? According to this paper, there are four major problems that have to be resolved – 1) as a structure, the ARPM is cumbersome and technically complex, 2) the reports it produces are too long for working journalists to use effectively, 3) media outreach efforts remain inadequate, and 4) APRM self-assessment questionnaires, at least until recently, avoided asking media-related questions. That the report concludes with recommendations on how to resolve these problems (and more) goes without saying.
