This paper discusses South Africa’s approach to economic statecraft in dealing with its neighbors Zimbabwe and Swaziland. The author 1) outlines South Africa’s key foreign policy and economic diplomacy principles; 2) discusses the conceptual distinction between economic statecraft and economic diplomacy; and 3) explains why South Africa favors diplomacy over statecraft in dealing with its neighbors. She then discusses the political situation in Zimbabwe and Swaziland and outlines how South Africa has opted to engage bilaterally and multilaterally to promote human rights, democracy and good governance in these countries.
