This paper addresses the normative, operational and institutional interrelations between independence, democratization and integration in Africa. More specifically, the author gives a historical and contextual overview of the role the three processes played in the formation of the African Union (AU), the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), as well as the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG). In doing so, he highlights the past, present and future importance of the three institutions for pan-Africanism and democratic governance on the continent.
