This paper examines patterns in international economic integration and the implications of these for the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) in general and South Africa in particular. The author argues that US-initiated mega regional free trade agreements (such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership) could marginalize the WTO and stall Doha negotiations, which are central for the BRICS and developing countries’ agenda. He therefore maintains that the BRICS must work together on a multifaceted trade negotiating strategy. However, in case they fail to do so, the authors also look at how South Africa would have to proceed to recalibrate its trade strategy.
