This paper examines the need for and advances in South Africa’s transition to a green economy. After highlighting that South Africa needs to respond to both climate change and energy crises in the country, the author discusses the structure of the energy industry in South Africa and reviews the government’s political commitments to promote green energy. Finally, she evaluates the policy steps undertaken to this end, pointing out advances and ongoing challenges.
