This brief discusses India-Afghanistan relations and how they are affected by Pakistan. The author first addresses the strategic importance of Afghanistan to India as well the extent of India-Afghanistan relations which, she argues, have been impeded from becoming stronger by India's attempts to assuage Pakistan's concerns over New Delhi's growing regional influence. She then discusses Afghan President Karzai’s demand for greater defense and security cooperation from India and suggests that despite the strategic importance of its neighbor, New Delhi is unlikely to comply with his request for weapons and training.
