This commentary provides an overview of the National Security Strategy (NSS) adopted by Japan in December 2013. More specifically, the author discusses the drivers behind the NSS' implementation, its principles and objectives, and how it will strengthen Japan's national security. She concludes that the new NSS is significant because it clarifies Japan’s path towards ‘proactive pacifism’ and includes a stronger maritime security focus, as well as an increased resolve on the part of Tokyo to stand up against Beijing.
