Ahead of 4th EU-Africa Summit in April 2014, this commentary discusses the advantages of increasing energy cooperation between the EU and sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, the authors concentrate on three aspects that define the energy relationship between the EU and sub-Saharan Africa and will shape cooperation 1) import-dependent Europe is interested in African supplies to meet its oil and gas needs; 2) poverty and energy poverty is still a concern to many Africans; and 3) climate change is gaining more relevance as a result of the EU pushing for carbon cuts and African governments becoming increasingly worried about the impact of climate change.
