This book examines the progress countries in the Western Balkans have made since signing the 2003 Thessaloniki Declaration which officially started their process towards EU membership. It includes chapters on, amongst other issues 1) the evolution of the EU’s engagement in the region; 2) the democratic transformation of the Western Balkans; 3) corruption and good governance in the Western Balkans; 4) an assessment of the progress and challenges encountered in the fight against organized crime in the Western Balkans; 5) an assessment of the main Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions deployed to the region in the past decade; and 6) an analysis of the progress and the challenges encountered in the field of regional cooperation.
