This brief examines the potential of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) to improve the EU’s energy balance. It first discusses the motivations and expectations behind the US and the EU’s interest in a trade agreement and the EU’s expectations regarding energy issues connected to the TTIP. The author then argues that the TTIP cannot reduce EU reliance on Russian gas imports, at least not in the short term, and warns that all parties should prepare for a protracted period of difficult and lengthy negotiations over the partnership.
